Let it snow!
Dreaming of a white Christmas? As the holiday draws ever nearer, bets are being made on which European cities are most likely to see snow on Christmas Day.
According to bookmakers, Moscow, Gdansk and Prague are the most likely cities in Europe to see a white Christmas this year,
The odds of snow falling in the Russian capital on 25 December are 1/6, with Gdansk on Poland’s Baltic coast second favourite at 1/4, say Ladbrokes.
Other cities in Poland, Austria, Hungary and Switzerland all also come near the top of the list, although it appears the chance of actually spotting a snowflake in these places is still fairly low.
Snow and freezing conditions swept through central and eastern Europe this week, coming as almost a relief to locals, who have been experiencing a record mild winter till now.
This December – the warmest in Europe for hundreds of years, according to meteorologists - saw daisies growing in parks in Moscow. Bears in the Tatra National Park in southern Poland have yet to hibernate and have been wandering around near tourist trails at a time of year when they should be tucked up asleep for the winter.
But this week heavy snow fell in many areas of Europe today, causing grid lock in the Polish capital Warsaw this morning and disrupting transport in many places across Northern Europe. For the delegates and journalists struggling to get to the Copenhagen Summit this morning, the snow added further to their woes, but Danish police thanked it for discouraging many of the protesters in the capital from staging further demonstrations.
