French festival has sax appeal
Saxophonist Michael Cheret at the festival
It may have been invented by a Belgian musician but the saxophone was actually developed in France. Now the instrument's influence on the music scene is being celebrated at a festival in Paris.
The saxophone is mostly associated with jazz, but actually started off as a classical instrument. It was developed in the 1840s by the Belgian musician Adolphe Sax, who was attempting to approve the sound of his clarinet.
Saxophones en Fete is an annual celebration of saxophones, featuring concerts and masterclasses. This year the organisers have focussed on combining the sound of saxophones with electronics, and the event will end with a concert featuring computers as well instruments.
