The UK Conservative party faces embarrassment over its alliances in the European Parliament after their bloc's leader, Polish MEP Michal Kaminski, was accused of anti-Semitism.

Since the Conservatives joined the new eurosceptic European Conservative and Reformist (ECR) group in the European Parliament, headed by Kaminski, the Polish MEP has been repeatedly portrayed as an anti-Semite, racist and homophobe in the UK media.

Kaminski is accused of organizing a 2001 campaign to block events to mark the World War II massacre of hundreds of Jews in the northeast Polish town of Jedwabne . The UK press also highlighted a video clip from 2000 in which Kaminski uses a derogatory Polish word pedal (faggot) to describe gay rights campaigners.

Following these revelations, London-based rabbi Barry Marcus publicly urged the Conservative MEPs to sever relations with the Polish politician and pull out of the ECR group.

The UK Independent on Sunday newspaper alleged that Kaminski was only made head of the ECR after the intervention of Polish President Lech Kaczynski, who personally phoned Conservative party leader David Cameron to ask him to support Kaminski instead of Conservative MEP Timothy Kirkhope.
