Harsh weather causes transport chaos
Icy conditions throughout Europe are playing havoc with the travel plans of anyone brave enough to venture outside their front door.
The UK, Ireland, France, and the Netherlands are among the countries feeling the freeze with airport and road closures becoming a regular occurrence.
Flights have been delayed and cancelled with some airports being forced to close their doors altogether. Two airports experiencing major delays are Paris-Orly and Heathrow, while Madrid and Amsterdam now claim to be operating normally.
The unforgiving weather has also affected road and rail travel throughout Europe. Icy roads have made driving conditions dangerous and numerous countries have reported a shortage of salt to help grit the slippery surfaces.
In Spain approximately 600 km of the country's main roads have either been shut down or are limited to light vehicles. Most of the roads still open require drivers to use chains on their tyres.
A Eurostar train was stuck in the Channel Tunnel for over 2 hours today while four other train services through the tunnel were cancelled. These events follow December's 3-day suspension of Eurostar after several trains broke down.
Sweden has recorded record winter low temperatures of -40.8C according to Radio Sweden, while 122 homeless people in Poland are reported to have died.
Freezing temperatures and snow are set to continue around Europe this weekend.
