How to find good food in Paris
Fine French food is delicious and Paris certainly has no shortage of restaurants. But how do you sift though the myriad of suggestions on the internet and in hundreds of guidebooks to find the perfect meal? One group of Anglophone food writers has teamed up to try to solve the problem.
Two American food writers, Barbara Austin and Meg Zimbeck, have just launched a website that they hope will become the place to go for those who want to be in the know about Parisian food and wine.
They are the editors of the newly-launched Paris by Mouth - a site that compiles food writing about the French capital from all over the web.
Zimbeck says that planning is the key to avoiding having a disappointing meal and nowadays that means using the internet.
The web has changed the business of writing about food enormously. Ausin notes that in the past there were just a handful of powerful food critics, usually writing for daily papers. They still exist, to some extent, but she thinks that online food writing allows for more flexibility.
She decided that the Paris by Mouth site should be a kind of clearing house for solid, trustworthy reviews – in English – about eating and drinking in Paris.
But why trust them? Well, the site’s 12 regular contributors are rather well-known food writers and bloggers, including the former Europe editor of Gourmet magazine Alex Lobrano; Clothilde Dusoulier of the very popular Chocolate and Zucchini blog; Dorie Greenspan, and Patricia Wells.
However, as they say – the proof of the pudding is in the eating. And only time will tell if Paris’s internet community will embrace the recommendations of the team.
