World Cup blog: Ireland dons the sombrero
Now even though the Irish aren’t at this year’s World Cup, that doesn’t mean they aren’t enjoying it. Mexico’s hammer-blow defeat of France last night was openly celebrated in the streets of Dublin, because like an elephant we Irish never forget!
Last November, I was among the millions screaming “HAND BALL” at TV sets around the globe, as French striker Thierry Henry practically threw the ball into the Irish net to send Les Bleus to South Africa, and the Irish into depression. The referee was the only man in the stadium who failed to see the injustice and the result stood.
So like any genuine football fan I hold a grudge and last night Mexico did both football and myself justice by hammering the French.
Pizza hut outlets on the Emerald Isle also got into the spirit, by giving free pizzas to punters for every goal scored against Mr Henry and friends.
Oh, and besides France’s downfall, zee mighty Germans had a shock of their own. They were beaten 1-0 today by Serbia, after winning their opening game 4-0 against the Aussies.
The bad news about the giant killing going on over in South Africa, is that anyone as stupid as me who put down a serious amount of money on the likes of Spain, England and Germany doing well, may have to re-think that holiday.
But we can sleep easier folks as the last few days have seen the tournament spring into life…the football has improved, we’ve had a sackful of goals, the results have been shocking and not to go on about it but…we may soon be saying Au Revoir to the French – Gracias Mexico! Olé, Olé, Olé!
