World Cup blog: It’s raining goals. Hallelujah!
World Cup day seven, World Cup blog number two. I know, I know I’ve been a lazy boy. It’s just so hard to concentrate with all this football! But I come bearing good news folks – World Cup 2010 has finally sprung to life. In the last 24 hours we’ve had goals, skills and lots of excitement.
Yesterday, we witnessed the shock of the tournament as favourites Spain were beaten 1-0 by the not so mighty Switzerland. The result came as a huge shock especially given most seasoned footy fans would struggle to name two players from the Swiss side.
In other news, host nation South Africa face an uphill struggle following their hammering at the hands of Uruguay. The South Americans beat the hosts 3-0 in front of the Bafana Bafana supporters, much to the chagrin of the host nation and nearly every neutral fan watching from home.
If they fail to qualify for the second round, they will become the only host nation ever to do so. There’s still hope though, as they play 1998 champions France next Thursday – a game they must win.
And from the World Cup hosts, we go to Mr World Cup himself, Diego Armando Maradona. The man who almost single-handedly won the World Cup in 1986 and caused waves when he failed a drug test during the 1994 tournament is still making the headlines.
Argentina’s pint-sized coach said Brazil legend Pele “should go back to the museum,” whatever that means, and said that he and UEFA chief Michel Platini never had a very close relationship. Both Pele and Platini had questioned Maradona’s motives and skills claiming he took the job for the money and that he wasn’t much of a coach.
Perhaps King Diego should let his players do the talking from now on, however, as they slaughtered the plucky South Koreans 4-1 this morning.
And I know some of you are reading this and screaming that I’ve hardly said a word about the 13 European nations. Well, ladies and gentlemen, I was trying to spare you, but if you insist.
The Germans and the Dutch are the only ones flying the flags at the moment. Slovenia and the Swiss scraped their wins. And how do I put this without sounding harsh? The rest look good, but not as good as the Asians, Africans and South Americans! Only time will tell.
